Incredibly, US president Donald Trump blames mental illness and video games for the El Paso and Ohio killings (Irish Examiner, August 6). His dependence on the gun lobby for financial and electoral support blinds him to the ease which US citizens can obtain lethal guns.

One of the great challenges of today’s world is trying to see the other’s point of view, to respect positions that are so far from your own considered position that they seem incomprehensible, dangerously uninformed, or just plain stupid. That challenge is exacerbated by the refusal of individuals or societies to change circumstances or behaviour that lead to, or at least facilitate, repeated tragedy.
