The memories came flooding back to me in Thurles yesterday from all angles. It was almost 20 years to the day since we, Clarecastle, won our only Munster title in 1997. We had beaten Ballygunner in the semi-final. There was a Limerick team in the final again yesterday, just like there had been when we met Patrickswell.

Kevin Downes was listed as number 24 in the match programme for Sunday’s Limerick senior hurling championship final. He has been in and out of the action all year due to injury. And the county player admitted afterwards it was touch and go right up to the throw-in whether he would be fit to play with Na Piarsaigh in the decider against Patrickswell.

Limerick’s David Breen has been ruled out of action until the start of July, meaning the Na Piarsaigh man will miss the Munster SHC semi-final against Tipperary should the county see off Clare on May 24 in the provincial opener.
