The news this week that the popular Great Western Greenway in Mayo has been blocked by a landowner comes as no surprise; it was only a matter of time before this happened, and we can only be thankful that it didn’t occur at the height of the tourist season.

LIKE most Irish people, I continue to be shocked and saddened at the abuse of children by people in authority, and to be surprised that any decent people still remaining within the Catholic Church hierarchy seem unable to strongly condemn the abusers and the so-called Canon Law that shields them.
