MAUREEN O’Donnell got it smack on with her ‘’Do you know who I am syndrome’ letter (November 9), as did Richard Duncliff with his letter headlined ‘Celebrity glut’ in the same issue. We seem to have an infatuation with celebrity status or celebrities.

BEHIND all the slick explanations interspersed with some orchestrated craw-thumping on behalf of Neil Prendeville, only Claire O’Sullivan realises what is truly at stake (Irish Examiner, November 4/6).

IN speaking of the Neil Prendeville imbroglio, Pat Kenny is quoted (Irish Examiner, November 4) as saying: “On one hand, nobody had died, everyone present was adult and lots of people have been subjected to that kind of exposure from time to time.”

CRYOBIOLOGY still belongs to the realms of science fiction, although it has its followers in the US who wish to be frozen immediately after death in anticipation of possible future revival.

IF someone from outside this jurisdiction were to wonder what punishment is appropriate for an adult guilty of brutalising and killing a small child, the anwer is four years in prison.

ENVIRONMENT Minister John Gormley put on a petulant performance on RTÉ’s Prime Time (January 7) when Miriam O’Callaghan asked him about his own duties and those of others during the recent floods and blizzards.

WE must be grateful for small mercies — but not too grateful to those who released more than 500 tonnes of water per second close to midnight last Thursday when most people were in bed and business owners, already trying to cope with a battered economy, had left their premises unaware that the ESB, in its wisdom, had decided to lower the water level in the Inniscarra dam as the witching-hour of midnight approached.

THIS may be a foolish question, but it’s been prompted by a recent visit to the supermarket looking for blueberries and finding they had sold out.

“YOU work for us and you are answerable to us” ... that is the message the electorate now needs to send to all politicians given the privilege of sitting in the Dáil, particularly those at ministerial level.

FULL marks to Maureen O’Donnell (Letters, September 7). I want to compliment her for her realistic and constructive contribution to the upcoming referendum.

IN her letter (September 7), Maureen O’Donnell painted the EU as the big bad wolf and argued that the Irish electorate are suffering from the consequences of decisions taken in Europe.

MAUREEN O’Donnell’s misconceptions on the Lisbon guarantees and her reckless casting of Angela Merkel as a modern-day Hitler (Letters, September 7) cannot be left unchecked.

THOSE who thought the comedy show Kilinascully was far too exaggerated may have to think again if they reflect on the various capers of the last few years.
