PETER Kelly, aka Franc, likes to surprise his wife Eadaoin on Valentine’s Day. The mystery drive will lead to either a beach or forest destination for a winter picnic. “We might go for dinner afterwards, to a hotel, or we might stay in some little country house or B&B, wherever the direction takes us,” says the Cork-based event designer and presenter of RTÉ’s Say Yes to the Dress.

It seems our ‘domestic’, but still wild, heron, Ron, has ‘gone west’ and we find we miss him, scanning skies, balconies, rooftops and canopies of trees in our local wood (those still standing after the multiple storms) for his familiar, elegant profile cut out of the heavenly blue.

WILDLIFE frolics in the foreground where a stream trickles through, the old estate trees and pasture of the abandoned Kincraigie Estate form a backdrop where horses graze, there are glimpses of the harbour at Courtmacsherry down below through the valley, beaches back over the headland; yes, Brookhill House has quite a bit in its favour.
