Cormac Walsh is well fitted to the mould of the modern-day wing-forward. He covers the ground, takes his scores and gets through an amount of work that often goes unseen. The Midleton man’s positivity and openness is as impressive as his on-field exploits and he has very much enjoyed his side’s run to Sunday’s Cork SHC final.

There was only going to be one winner from this first-round Cork SHC clash in Páirc Uí Rinn yesterday and yet it wasn’t so much a case of 2013 champions Midleton being comfortably in control all through, more an issue of how closer Bishopstown might have been had they not accumulated 17 wides.

With a first county senior hurling title since 1991 safely under their belt, the next focus for Midleton has to be the Munster title — so says former great John Fenton. The only Cork club to have won the provincial crown since his own side did it in 1987 has been Newtownshandrum.

THEIR winning performance was almost dwarfed by the massive achievement in ending a 74 year wait for a place in the Cork SHC final, but it took an outstanding team display from Carrigtwohill, highlighted by inspirational play from Niall McCarthy and superb defending, to thwart Midleton in Páirc Uí Chaoimhy esterday.
