Mary Smith met Enda Kenny in 2009. He was “practically crying” when he heard her story of being dumped in the Magdalene Laundry in Sunday’s Well, Cork by the “cruelty man”.
Victims groups have accused the McAleese committee of not being “transparent” by springing interviews on survivors without prior knowledge and weakening the inquiry by not issuing a public call for victims to come forward.
The McAleese report into the Magdalene Laundries does admit that the State was complicit in sending women to and keeping them at the laundries, but it clearly plays down the harsh, brutal regime that survivors have long reported ruled there.
