I wish to comment on the headline “Drink fluoride to keep teeth in old age” ( Irish Examiner, March 10). The article was based on a recent study on the effects of water fluoridation on the dental health of older people and was conducted by Trinity College Dublin.

It is no surprise to find that the Centre for Health Services, University of Kent, in a current study published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, found a clear association between communities with artificial fluoridation of drinking water in the UK and thyroid dysfunction.

In 1961, the Government established Nitrigin Eireann Teoranta (NET), a State-owned enterprise that what was to become one of the most costly and ineffective State-owned enterprises in our history. Ultimately, the decision to establish NET led to a series of disastrous political and economic decisions that continued for decades as the State wasted hundreds of millions of pounds of taxpayers funds to justify the investment.

I wish to respond to some of the comments and misrepresentations made by Professor June Nunn, Prof Martin Kinirons, Dr John Walsh and Dr Peter Gannon, President of the Irish Dental Association, in their letter published in the Irish Examiner (Oct 1).

Declan Waugh, as usual, does not fail to deliver his usual overdose of bad science, tempered with a touch of apoplexy in his recent letter to the Irish Examiner (Wednesday, July 2) where he treats us to yet another cocktail of inaccuracy about water fluoridation. To his cult following in the outer reaches of the alternative health sector where homeopathy, and not medicine, holds sway he may be a hero. To those of us, who have taken the time and trouble to check his outrageous claims on this subject, he is, to put it mildly, quite misleading.

I congratulate the Irish Examiner for the article of June 3 highlighting the dangers to human health of endocrine disruptive chemicals. However, it’s a pity that the researcher did not mention that fluoride is the one endocrine chemical that the Irish public are exposed to the most, and in far greater concentrations than any other European country.

I AGREE with Declan Waugh (January 17) that the main political parties (Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil) have turned their back on Bandon. However, the Bandon Labour Party branch and Cllr Gearoid Buckley has ensured the Bandon electoral area remains a “high priority” through active engagement with the local community and businesses.

WE’VE heard a lot about zombie banks in recent months, but what got us into this crisis is a zombie government. A government that appears to be staggering aimlessly from one crisis to the next, cannibalising the economy to feed its insatiable addiction to saving the private banking sector at the cost of our economic sovereignty.
