It might be possible to find someone who didn’t like Larry Gogan, but it would take one hell of a search to identify them. Pick any year out of the half a century he worked for RTE, and you’d find the same Larry. Smiling. Unpompous. And wonderfully UNSURE of himself.

There will be a lot of fanfare over the coming weeks to mark Gay Byrne’s 80th birthday, which falls in early August, as there has just been plaudits for Bill O’Herlihy, as he stepped away from the anchor seat of RTÉ’s sports department, having steered us through 10 World Cups and 10 Olympic Games on TV. And rightly so.

It was announced yesterday that Larry Gogan is to be presented with the Outstanding Achievement Award tomorrow night in Kilkenny. He joins an illustrious troop, including Gay Byrne, Marian Finucane, Micheál O Muircheartaigh, and Jimmy Magee of RTÉ, along with Des Whelan of WLR FM in Waterford.
