The Department of Justice is examining possible “legal issues” in an inquiry report into how the Garda Ombudsman handled its investigation of a sergeant, who took his life before he could be informed that he had been cleared.

The garda sergeant who last week died by apparent suicide in a Donegal garda station had told his wife he was facing up to five years in prison after being questioned by Garda Siochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) investigators.

DESPITE calls from family and fellow gardaí for a judicial inquiry into the death of Garda Sergeant Michael Galvin — who appears to have taken his own life at a Garda station in Co Donegal a week ago — the Garda Ombudsman Commission is pressing ahead with its own investigation into the tragedy in which the commission is apparently linked.
