On another superb weekend for Irish rowing, Paul and Gary O’Donovan won gold in the men’s lightweight double sculls at World Rowing Cup 111 in Lucerne, Switzerland yesterday while teammate Sanita Puspure took silver in an incredibly tight race in the women’s single sculls.

The Irish domestic rowing calendar gets underway this weekend with the Cork Head of the River. It’s the first of eight “heads” to be held around the country between now and April 1, when events change to full regattas. The main difference here being that HORs are simply timed events where boats are let off one at a time over longer distances, while a regatta comprises of side by side racing and considerably weightier glory for title-holders.

Paul O’Donovan (21) and his brother Gary (22) will compete in the lightweight men’s doubles at the World Rowing Championships in Aiguebelette, France, next week with a view to claiming one of the top 11 spots and, with it, a ticket to next year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
