Vodafone’s former chief executive testified today that his company’s takeover in 2000 of mobile phone firm Mannesmann was determined purely by market pressures, and was not influenced by executive payments under scrutiny at the trial of the German mobile operator’s former head.

Leading shares were surging in opening deals, with the FTSE 100 testing the 3,900 point barrier as tobacco and oil stocks advanced, while positive news from Oracle overnight aided second-line technology stocks, dealers said. At 8.59 am, the FTSE 100 index was up 67.9 points to 3,903.1, having earlier touched a high of 3,907.2.

Charges are likely soon following an inquiry into whether illegal payments were made in the takeover of German mobile phone company Mannesmann by British rival Vodafone, a lawyer for a top union official who is under investigation said today.
