Here’s some travel ideas for spring 2015

Tony Clayton Lea reveal his travel tips for new year adventurers.

Country

This year Singapore (above) celebrates 50 years of independence, and so for the full year (let alone in Spring) the island is planning to enjoy its Golden Jubilee in fine style.

City

Historically and politically, 2015 is an important year for America, and especially its capital city Washington DC, as the year marks the 150th anniversary of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.

Island

Malta never goes out of style, and 2015 is no exception. Easy to access, constant warm climate, nine Unesco World Heritage Sites, seven Megalithic Temples, and more than a few great restaurants. Why ever not?

Region

Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey, holds an unenviable position in history (a failed offensive by the Allies in the First World War), and 2015 is the Gallipolli Campaign’s 100th anniverary. Expect ‘war’ tour operators (and tourists) to be very busy.

Best Value

Portugal is often unfairly overlooked because of its next-door-neighbour proximity to Spain, but its under-visited interior highlights an off-the-beaten-track splendor and the best value break we’ve experienced in years.

Hotel

The Dean, 33 Harcourt Street; 01-6078110; thedean.ie, is Ireland’s newest boutique hotel, and is laden down with cool rooms, cool play areas, cool rooftop spaces, cool restaurant. We did say it’s cool, didn’t we?

Surprise, surprise

Belgrade, Serbia, is one of Europe’s most underrated cities. Tourism is not so much in its infancy as virtually non-existent, yet it remains one of the cheapest cities in Europe to visit.

Must-have travel gear

Hill walkers delight! Gore-tex ‘surround’ footwear (which features a membrane extended to the bottom of the foot) will be launched by brands such as Clarks, Ecco and La Sportiva round about now.

Must-have travel accessory

The 2015 Kelty range of Capture backpacks twists around with an integrated case that fastens to the chest. Why? So you can put your smartphone into it and shoot video as you walk, that’s why.

Let it go!

We’re all going Frozen mad these days, especially after Christmas, which is why we’re predicting something of a rush in mid-term breaks for visits to Norway and its truly spectacular chilly scenery.

Ireland

The upsurge in tourists continues this year, thanks to the global popularity of Game of Thrones. And in May, Ashford Castle’s restoration will be completed. Cue even more luxury on the Wild Atlantic Way!

Honeymoon

You can honeymoon in tropical Hawaii via America’s West Coast cites such as Los Angeles and San Francisco (to which Aer Lingus operates flights) and it’s a nice aloha to you, too.

Luxury airport lounges

We’ve seen the new Aer Lingus lounge at Heathrow receive deserved kudos, but there are more about to pop up around the world’s airports. A shoulder massage, sir? A facial, madam? Walk this way, please…
