The red-haired wonder had the entire nation sighing with admiration at how nice he was on the Late Late Toy Show last week, he pops up in homeless project The High Hopes Choir on RTÉ next Thursday, and has also been named as the world’s most streamed artist for 2014. Another man who’s been getting his fair share of streaming action is Korean popstar

Psy, he’s boldly gone where no singer has ever gone before and crossed the 32-bit integer mark on Youtube with ‘Gangnam Style’, meaning the 2,147,483,647 views of the song has meant the streaming site has had to upgrade its counters.

GIG WISE: Having sold out their June 20 gig in Ireland, Fleetwood Mac have announced a second date for July 10. Tickets from €55 + booking fee go on sale Monday. And, despite the rumours, it’s highly unlikely the Fleetwoods will be playing Glastonbury this year as they’ve been confirmed as headliners for the Isle of Wight Festival in June. In Co Cork, the Castle bar in Glanmire has long been providing an alternative to the trek ‘in town’ for people of the area, and this weekend sees a number of events that include Damien Dempsey on Saturday night, as well as comedian David McSavage tonight.

Both Hozier and Printer Clips are sold out in Cork tomorrow, but one of the most interesting gigs of the days ahead could be the appearance of Sleaford Mods at the Crane Lane in Cork for an unusually timed evening gig at 5pm on Sunday.

Their swagger and liberal use of the C-word could be straight from the post-punk era, but the Nottingham outfit aren’t afraid to mix a number of styles into something that is strangely unique. Berlin-based deep techno merchant Rodhad is at Cyprus Avenue tonight.

Looking into next year, jazz innovators Phronesis have announced a gig for Triskel Christchurch in Cork on February 5.

FILM TIPS: There’s been no shortage of big films getting the roll-out in recent weeks, and Tolkien fans are eagerly counting down the hours until the release of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies next Friday.

Meanwhile, the biggie for kids this weekend is Penguins of Madagascar. Over at Triskel Christchurch, the roster from Sunday includes Citizenfour, the documentary in which US whistleblower Edward Snowden shows classified documents showing how the National Security Agency’s surveillance programmes. Triskel also has Say When, a comedy featuring the impressive cast of Keira Knightley, Chloë Grace Moretz and Sam Rockwell.

On Monday, the IFI in Dublin screens Mare Nostrum, the 1926 silent film directed by Rex Ingram, the renowned Irish director of that era.

CLASSICAL NIGHTS: The Irish Chamber Orchestra’s Joyeaux Noël concert of seasonal music is at St Fin Barre’s Cathedral in Cork on Thursday; and St Mary’s Cathedral, Limerick, next Friday. Also in Cork, a Carols by Candlelight Concert will take place at St Patrick’s Church on the Lower Glanmire Road, next Friday in aid of the Cork Association for Autism.
