O’Conor masterpiece highlight of Adam’s sale
Landscape with Road and Farm buildings, which dates to c1889, demonstrates a deep awareness of Impressionist techniques by this celebrated Irish artist. Estimated at €150,000-€250,000 it is one of four O’Conors from the dining room at Deepwell, the Blackrock, Co Dublin, home of the late Dublin businessman, John Reihill, of the fuel importing business, Tedcastles.
All four are in this sale which includes a selection of fresh-to-market art. Landscape with Trees, Nueil-sur-Layon is estimated at €50,000-70,000, Landscape with Garden and Mountain is estimated at €35,000-45,000 and Le Drap Blanc has an estimated value of €60,000-80,000.
A monumental work by Sean Keating — The Port Authority — from the same collection has an estimate of €80,000-120,000. Other lots from 50 or so at Deepwell (Mr Reihill’s late father John Snr was a collector too) include work by James Humbert Craig, Frank McKelvey, Sean Keating, William Conor, Louis le Brocquy, John Lavery, Mary Swanzy and Walter Osborne. There is sculpture by Gerda Frommel, Vivienne Roche, Rowan Gillespie and Michael Warren and Irish American sculptor Jerome Connor (1874-1943).
The sale includes art by Dan O’Neill and Colin Middleton from the estate of Gabriel de Freitas of Beaulieu House near Drogheda. There is work by George Campbell, Norah McGuinness, Patrick Hennessy and Gerard Dillon. A Capriccio with Figures and Ruins by William van der Hagen is estimated at €20,000-30,000.
