Plenty of temptation at two auctions

Auctions in Bandon and Tralee next Tuesday, (Dec 11) offer plenty to tempt collectors.

Hegarty’s sale in Bandon at 7pm offers antique furniture, including a seven-piece French bedroom suite (€2,000-€4,000), a long case clock made in Belfast (€3,000-€5,000), an Irish Georgian sofa table (€1,200-€1,800) and plenty of occasional pieces. Jewellery on offer includes a solitaire diamond ring (€2,000-4,000) and two three-stone diamond rings. There is Irish and English silver and plenty of collectible items.

Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian furniture will come under the hammer at Kerry Auction Rooms, Moyderwell, Tralee, at noon next Tuesday. The sale will include books, porcelain, Corgi and Dinky die-cast models, vintage rising rods, military and a framed and signed Munster Rugby jersey.

Qianlong jade

THERE are some Chinese items at Mealy’s two-day fine and decorative art sale in Castlecomer next Tuesday and Wednesday (Dec 11-12) but it seems unlikely that the record of €630,000 for a tiny white jade Qing Dynasty seal set last week at Sheppard’s in Durrow will be broken.

There is much of interest at Mealy’s sale of over 1,300 lots, not least a Model A Ford car from 1928. The auction will feature ceramics including a Chinese sang-de-boeuf bottle vase (€700-€900) and a Qianlong jade libation cup (€1,000-€1,500) as well as silver, tribal art; gold; light fittings; glass; whiskey; military and decorative art on Tuesday.

On offer on Wednesday are paintings, water colours and prints; furniture; carpet; clocks and barometers. Viewing is from noon tomorrow and the sales are at 10.30am on auction day.


The top lot at the James Adam Irish art sale in Dublin, The Travelling Show from 1892 made a hammer price of €140,000. The Pikeman by Jerome Conner which featured on this page last week made a hammer price of €20,000.

The Morgan O’Driscoll online art sale with over 200 lots runs until next Monday evening at 7pm at

Limerick Auction Rooms on Ballysimon Road is the venue for a sale of over 460 lots next Wednesday (Dec 12) at 11.30am It will feature antique furniture, coins, jewellery, stamps and collectibles.

A low Regency Cork side cabinet with hairy paw feet is among the items at Marshs sale in Cork City Centre at noon today. The cabinet is estimated at up to €2,000.

More than 100 lots of art feature at Dolan’s sale in the Pillo Hotel, Galway, tomorrow at 3pm.

Cork city landscapes, portraits, abstract art and still lifes all feature in Passing the Torch, an exhibition of paintings by Dr Madoline O’Connell at the Jennings Gallery. The gallery is located at the Brookfield Health Sciences Complex in University College Cork and the exhibition continues until Jan 10.

Auctioneer Tom Linehan will hold a pop-up antique shop sale at 25 Douglas St, Cork from Monday until this day week. Antique furniture on offer includes a number of quality Victorian pieces and other items.

Vintage is coming back into fashion and there is a big selection of everything from pocket watches to Chinese ceramics at Fellini’s Coffee House on Carey’s Lane in Cork City Centre. Most prices are under €200.

The Pavilion Garden Centre is hosting a Christmas Market this weekend which includes antiques, collectibles, silver ware, and porcelain. A free shuttle service will run from Ballygarvan GAA pitch this Saturday and Sunday from 12.30pm until 5.30pm.

In Newcastlewest today there will be a Christmas auction with more than 600 lots at O’Donovan’s.

Art for Christmas is the title of the sale of more than 450 lots at Whyte’s in Dublin at 2pm tomorrow.

Also in Dublin there will be an auction of vintage wine, champagne, and port at James Adam on Tuesday, Dec 11, at 3pm followed by a Christmas sale of artworks and literature at 5pm. Both sales are on view from tomorrow afternoon.

At Frank Lewis in Killarney the Christmas exhibition features paintings by Rebecca Carroll, Robert Egginton, Olivia O’ Carra, Susan Sex, Marijke van Wijk, and Claudio Viscardi.

Hibernian Antique Fairs are at Tinakilly House, Co Wicklow from 11am to 6pm tomorrow.
