Collectors spoiled for artistic choice

WITH art auctions in west Cork and Connemara, collectors are spoiled for choice this Bank Holiday Weekend.

The height of the holiday season, traditionally a quiet moment in the collector’s calendar, is bucking a long established trend with sales which allow Irish art lovers a more relaxed and leisurely appraisal of what is on offer than is sometimes possible.

Even if you are not a regular auction goer sales like these are a good place to dip your toe in the water and find something you like.

At Skibbereen in west Cork, Morgan O’Driscoll’s sale of 160 lots at 3pm on Monday is sure to be a big draw.

Viewing, which has been hectic at Ilen St. all week, continues today and tomorrow, from 11am to 5pm each day and from 11am on Bank Holiday Monday.

Prices of many Irish artworks are more affordable than they have been for some time.

A similar situation is unfolding at the leafy and beautiful surroundings of Ballynahinch Castle in Connemara where the Dolan’s auction of Irish art kicks off on Monday at noon.

The catalogue contains no less than 240 lots and there is a variety of styles to suit various tastes and pockets. Viewing is from 10am to 8pm today and tomorrow and from 10am on Monday.

Each auction offers a variety of work to choose from. Both are action replays of inaugural events at the height of the season last summer, auctions which turned out to be successful in the teeth of dire financial times.
