Nutritional treats that are frightfully good

IT’S no trick – these Halloween-inspired favourites are a nutritional treat. And they might help to keep your sugar cravings at bay, especially if the house is packed with bewitching sweets for the children.

Pump it up

Nothing says Halloween like a pumpkin. But as well as being great for carving scary faces into, these bright orange vegetables are bursting with vitamin C and eye-health-boosting vitamin A as well as fibre, which is important for digestive health and keeping you feeling full.

They’re also low in fat and calories, so they’re a great way of bulking out winter meals. The seeds are great little health-promoters too; packed full of phytosterols, which help reduce ’bad’ cholesterol, and mood-boosting amino acids. How about sprinkling a few on your breakfast oats?

An apple a day

When else do we play bobbing for apples other than at Halloween?

It’s not really an easy game to master; plucking apples from water using only your mouth, but something that’s very easy is topping up your daily nutrients by chomping down on these juicy fruits. With around 60-80 calories in a single one, they’re a great healthy snack loaded with antioxidants and fibre.

Studies suggest that people who eat an apple a day are significantly less likely to develop type 2 diabetes, and chewing raw apples increases saliva production which helps reduce tooth decay.

Devilishly good

Devil’s Claw may sound like an unpleasant Halloween party prop, but it’s also a herb, and a highly-nutritious one at that – its spooky name is due to the curled shape of its plant.

It can be bought over the counter as a supplement in capsule or tincture form and its anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties are said to be particularly beneficial to arthritic conditions.

Side-effects may sometimes apply though and always check with your doctor before taking anything new.

Rat attack

Along with black cats, snarly rats have a suitably witchy reputation which makes them appropriate for Halloween. You wouldn’t want to eat a rat, but how about whipping up a healthy ratatouille? Load it up with an array of colourful veg; peppers, aubergines and tomato, with lots of onion, garlic and basil for flavour and you’ll have a plate full of heart and immune-health friendly nutrition.

One serving of this French classic could count for four of your five-a-day.

Brew up

Knock up some witches’ brew for a quick nutrient fix. But forget eye of newt and toe of frog and whizz up some green fruit and vegetables instead. You’ll get the same grizzly broth Halloween-worthy effect, but it’ll taste a lot nicer and be very good for you too.

Kiwis, spinach and kale are all good vitamin-loaded ingredients. Pop in some omega 3-loaded chia seeds to turbo charge the healthiness – and it’ll look a bit like freaky frogspawn too!
