Beer of the week: St. Mels Spring Bock, 5.6% ABV, 500ml — €3.99

St Mel’s Brewing was established in Longford in 2014 by Eoin Tynan and Liam Hanlon (formerly brewer with Carlow Brewing Co — O’Haras etc).

Stockists: Bradleys, Sunnydale Off-Licences, SuperValu Nationwide, Londis Malahide, Deveneys, widely available in the Midlands

As you might expect these are all finely crafted beers and pleasingly they are bottle-conditioned.

This is a bottle- fermented Maibock — the strong bock lager brewed in Bavaria to herald the arrival of Spring — well suited to the recent mild Spring weather.

This has a rich red-gold colour, malt aromas with a touch of smoke, earthy and light honey character, and a crisp fresh finish with subtle hopping.
