GET THE LOOK: Copper is the look for Summer 2017

Silver and gold may leave you cold but copper is one of Summer 2017’s most flattering makeup trends. Rachel Marie Walsh reports

Copper brings the heat this summer, with rosy metallic makeup from the catwalk at shows like Gucci and Topshop Unique inspiring many of the season’s high-street additions. This shade is warmer than other metals, drawing the eye without washing out fair skin. Think how it pops in pre-Raphaelite paintings (Emma Stone’s makeup artist Rachel Goodwin used Dante Gabriel Rossetti as a reference for awards’ season), and enlivens gemstones. It also looks great with both a tan and white clothing, as well as oceanic shades. It flatters every iris and, with the right formula, all ages. Here’s how to update your makeup with the foxy stuff.

Penny Lover

You may not be up for adapting your sexy smoky eye-look to any trend, I know, but adding this colour is an upgrade. Charlotte Tilbury adores a smoky eye, even claiming to do a “night eye” for bed (her husband never sees her without makeup), and has experimented with copper for red-carpet looks and fashion editorials. Her ‘The Dolce Vita’ Luxury Palette, €50, a quad of coppers, is ideal for rose-metallic eyes anytime and comes with step-by-step instructions for smoking. This Tilbury also works with Tom Ford Eye Colour Quad in Cognac Sable, €74, which houses four coppers with four different finishes (matte, shimmer, glitter and satin). Ford’s diversity of texture is great for creating depth but I find the shadows to be similar quality to Tilbury’s, so her price is a plus.

On this spectrum’s more affordable end, Frankfurt beauty brand Zoeva’s Rosie Golden Eye Palette, €21.80 at zoeva.de, contains ten versatile, highly-pigmented shades. ‘Foil’, ‘Just A Rose’ and ‘Copper is King’ are obvious choices for a smokey look. The formula contains enough Vitamin E oil to make it really easy to blend and fade-out. Milani Bella Eyes Gel Powder Shadow, €8.29, in ‘Copper,’ ‘Taupe’ and ‘Espresso’ are especially easy to play with, as their super-smooth gel formula takes a minute or two to set to powder.

Prime with Tony Moly Egg Pore Silky Smooth Balm, €12.68 at YesStyle.com, if skin is dry or your favourite shadow tends to flake. The Korean beauty favourite’s emollient formula renders lines and dehydration traceless and keeps makeup comfortably in place.

Liquid Copper

Stila’s Magnificent Metal Glitter and Glow Liquid Shadow, €27.60, is one of my favourite launches of the year to date. These sparkly foils are perhaps a little much for some eyes but look striking washed over the entire lid and drawn under the lash-line with the doe-foot applicator. The ‘Bronzed Bell,’ ‘Kitten Karma,’ and ‘Smouldering Satin’ shades are ideal for this season. Their formula holds a lot of shimmer without shedding and contains nothing likely to irritate sensitive eyes. Gigi Hadid’s makeup artist Patrick Ta recommends limiting black accents — heavy lashes, thick liner — and keeping lips nude in order to maximise the copper’s colour impact.

Liquid lipsticks in metallic shades are ubiquitous right now but I have yet to find a formula that both enhances condition (as I think all lip formulas should) and stays looking consistently good enough to recommend ditching, say, NARS Audacious Lipstick in ‘Sandra’, €30, for some liquid copper. The filmy texture of these products requires drying ingredients if a brand’s angle is the latter and smear-prone substances otherwise. Urban Decay Vice Liquid Lipstick in ‘Trivial,’ €18.50, is one of the best-looking choices.

Copper nail polishes also abound but it is tough to beat Essie Nail Lacquer, €10.99, in ‘Penny Talk’ for pure rose-gold glamour.

Pure copper in a highlighter looks horribly harsh but rose and peach-toned versions can look gorgeous on fair-to-medium complexions. Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector, €39, at SpaceNK, in ‘Rose Gold’ or ‘Topaz,’ blends beautifully and suits all skin types.

Copper Creams

Adopting the cream elements of any trend is easiest for dry or mature skin. Sleek Creme to Powder Blush in ‘Gerbera,’ €8.49, imparts a warm glow without highlighting dehydration or pore-size. Clarins Waterproof Eyeliner in #7 Copper, €21, looks pretty on eyes’ inner corners and shimmer particles are too finely-milled to cause discomfort. Playing with Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Cream Shadow Stick, €30 , in ‘Taupe,’ ‘Golden Pink’ and ‘Sand Dune’ can also yield very flattering results.

Copper Pigment

“Copper eyes” can be off-putting if you are not heavily into sparkle but some pigment powders really reward experimentation. Top of my list for this look are MAC Pigment in ‘Copper Sparkle’ and ‘Tan,’ €22, both of which can be used alone on the eyes or with a film-forming agent like MAC Mixing Medium Gel, €19.50 (online only), to adhere to lips.

How should I wear my hair with an off-the-shoulder dress this weekend?

I screenshot a lot of red-carpet looks and the morning after the Met Gala is always a frenetic click-fest, but Jessica Chastain’s hair this year gave me pause.

How can I copy this glorious braided-twisty thing? Up-dos that look slightly undone (or maintain hair’s natural texture, as least) are more youthful than sleek and sprayed styles generally and this one looks so pretty with a Bardot neckline.

Stylist Renato Campora used a Moroccanoil Treatment, €39.50, to provide a supple foundation for styling the star’s damp hair.

He layered on Moroccanoil Volumizing Mousse, €24.85, before blow-drying with the Moroccanoil 35 MM Boar Bristle Round Brush, €49.85, to smooth and straighten (Mark Hill Take Control! Round Brush, €10.99 at Boots, is a good bargain alternative).

When her hair was completely dry, he used a 1.5 inch curling iron like Toni&Guy Jumbo Curling Tongs, €35, to create natural movement and add vibrance and shine. He then wove a loose braid and tucked in the tail end to create volume before securing it with a bobby pin. A mist of Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray Strong, €22.75, completed the look with gloss and hold.
