Looking at the autumn/winter beauty trends

Katie Wright tracks down the latest hair and make-up tweaks to give you the edge.

THE autumn/winter catwalks offered a glut of gorgeous beauty looks that you can recreate at home.

It’s time to peruse the backstage beauty looks that will complement autumn’s trends. And the good news is, when it comes to make-up, this season there’s something for everyone.

From bold gold eyes and ’floating’ eyeliner, to subtle flushed cheeks and lightly lacquered lips, the catwalk cosmetics spectrum runs from striking to barely-there — and it’s all easily achievable at home.

We’ve got the products and the pro tips you need to start practising these designer-inspired looks now.

GOING FOR GOLD: At Rick Owens, some models were sent down the catwalk with their faces completely covered in gold leaf.

It’s not a look many people will want to recreate themselves, but the sparkly eye looks seen at Temperley London and Carolina Herrera created with metallic flecks rather than glitter powder are far more appealing.

“If you hate fallout as much as I do, you’ll want to stick with a liner rather than a loose glitter,” says make-up blogger MissBudgetBeauty.

CLIP ART: Think hair clips are only for children? You’ll think again when you see the gorgeous bejewelled floral hair accessories that matched the rose embellishments in the Dolce & Gabbana AW15 collection.

Plus, at Prada, high pineapple ponytails were fixed above the ear with cute barrettes and at Rochas, long minimalist grips held back poker straight locks — hair slides have never looked so grown-up.

* Accessorise Crystal Deco Alice Band, €20.60

TOW THE LINE: Eyeliner went in two directions for autumn, with London Fashion Week favourites Felder Felder and Matthew Williamson plumping for amped-up ’floating’ liner looks.

“We’ve all been there with liquid liner, trying to even up our eyes until they’re much thicker than intended. Well our luck is in ladies, ’cause that’s now a trend,” says MissBudgetBeauty.

Estee Lauder’s new liquid Little Black Liner is perfect for attempting this look, as the double-ended pen gives you the option of thick, thin or ultra fine lines.

SMOKE SIGNALS: The other eyeliner trend that ruled for autumn was an inversion of the smoky eye, as the focus shifted from the lid to the under eye area.

At Versace, Roberto Cavalli and Diane von Furstenburg, the gorgeously glam girls had lashings of black applied to the waterline, creating a grungy, sexy effect.

This is a look that’s best achieved with a soft kohl pencil and finished with lots of black mascara.

THE CHEEK OF IT: Peachy blushers have ruled on the catwalks for seasons, but now it’s all about creating a perky pink-cheeked glow (as seen at Topshop Unique, Michael Kors and Chloe), as if you’ve just returned from a wintry walk.

To get the right dewy colour, it has to be cream blush. Start with just a dash on your fingertip, and then build up your preferred hue, from ‘brisk stroll’ to ’long country ramble’.

* No 7 Pop & Glow Cream Blush Stick, €12.95

RICH LIPS: Chiming with the gothic flavour of the season, lots of designers turned to the dark side, with lip colours that ranged from burgundy (Dolce & Gabbana) and plum (Marchesa) to actual black (Giles). Not quite ready for an ultra-dark pout?

Start with a rich dark red and look for a lipstick that’s moisturising without being too shiny.

This isn’t about a perfectly lacquered look, more of a soaked-in stain.

* Clarins Joli Rouge Lipstick in Royal Plum, €22

RETURN OF THE GLOSS: Lipgloss has been something of dirty word at fashion week over the last few years, with make-up artists eschewing the shiny stuff in favour of stains and matte lipsticks. But for AW15, trendsetters Rodarte gave their girls very glossy pink pouts, while at Fendi, a bitten lip colour was overlaid with lots of gloss, a neat pairing for an intentionally messy eyeliner look.
