Q. I want to wear this season’s fuchsia lipstick. Which shade is best for fair skin with pink undertones?

A. Fuchsia is a great way to enliven fair skintones but certain shades can wash you out or highlight ruddiness. Blue-toned lipsticks with strong, true-fuchsia pigments flatter you best.

Topshop Lipstick in All About Me, €18, and Rouge Pur Couture The Mattes in 208 Fuchsia Fetiche, €33, are great for matte fans.

Creamy fuchsias like Clinique Different Lipstick in Raspberry Glacé, €19.50, or MAC Lipstick in Girl about Town, €15, are lovely. If balm is your bag, try Lancôme Baume in Love in Urban Ballet, €24.

Q. Do I really need an eye makeup primer?

Beauty Clinic

A. Eye primer seems an excessive purchase to lots of women and your need for one really depends on whether your eye cream creates a good base for makeup.

Also, if your facial primer is very thick or has an oil-control formula it may not be suitable for the eye area.

The best eye primers provide light smooth fine lines, keep makeup in place and contain proven skincare ingredients for long-term benefits. My favourites are by MAC and Smashbox.

MAC relaunches its Prep + Prime Eye this month as Prep + Prime 24-Hour Extended Eye Base, €21. The revamped formula is light and velvety. The formula is enriched by Vitamin E and suits all skin types.

The silicones do a good job of smoothing the area but this base won’t brighten. Smashbox Photo Finish Hydrating Eye Primer, €24, is a luminous formula with lots of moisturising and antioxidant ingredients.

The silky, lightweight texture won’t make your foundation pill. The latter is a winner for me because it works like brightening eye lotion.
