MUSIC NEWS: Glastonbury casts its massive shadow over the music world this weekend as over 150,000 people gather for the ultimate festival. It gets off to a flying start tonight with Lorde, Radiohead, and Major Lazer; while Foo Fighters and Ed Sheeran take to the Pyramid Stage over the next two nights.

Dave Grohl’s band have used the opportunity of their Glasto appearance to announce a new album, due for release in September. The record has been produced by Greg Kurstin, the knob-twiddler behind such un-Foo-like tracks as Sia’s Chandelier and Hello by Adele. NME reports that Grohl has promised it will be the band’s biggest-sounding album yet, comparing it to “Motorhead’s version of Sgt Pepper”. Sold! Cork Opera House has issued an apology for the chaos that dogged the sales of tickets for Bon Iver. The gig quickly sold out, but some punters were left in limbo while trying to make a purchase.

GIG WISE: Future Islands have sold out Cork Opera House for July 4, but there are some tickets left for Fleet Foxes’ second gig at the venue on July 12. The fact that the Foxes have just released a well-received album will probably mean that appearance will fill as well. Natty Wailer has played with everyone from Bob Marley to King Tubby, and the longterm Irish resident is part of the lineup for the inaugural Cork Ska & Reggae Festival being held at the Crane Lane and the Poor Relation at the end of July. Crane Lane has another industry veteran playing on July 19 — Lol Tolhurst was the original drummer with The Cure. In Dublin, Queens Of The Stone Age have announced a gig for November 24 at 3Arena.

FILM TIPS: Summer can be a difficult time to find decent cinema viewing, and even the current crop of non-blockbusters don’t seem to offering much of an alternative. For instance, The Book of Henry has a decent cast that includes Naomi Watts and Jacob Tremblay (the child in Room), as well as highly rated director Colin Trevorrow, but reports suggest the tale of a boy genius is quite a mess. The film has been getting such a slating that various Star Wars fans have taken to social media to express their fears about Trevorrow as director of Episode IX. Hampstead, with Diane Keaton and Brendan Gleeson, is also out today, and its tale of an unlikely love affair between their two characters is very much aimed at elder audiences. Mixed reviews have also accompanied that. Of course, one of Keaton’s great roles was in Manhattan, the 1979 film from Woody Allen that forms part of Triskel Cork’s classic movie roster from Sunday. Goodfellas and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest also feature.

CLONMEL JUNCTION: The Co Tipperary town has upped the ante for its annual arts festival (July 3-9), with top billing going to a four-night run of Swan Lake/Loch na hEala, which has Michael Keegan Dolan putting a widely acclaimed Irish twist on the classic ballet. The music strand also features three gigs at Mitchelstown Caves with the likes of Peter Broderick, Loah, and Brigid Mae Power; as well as concerts in Clonmel itself with Crash Ensemble, Martin Hayes, and many more.
