Goodnight Everyone by Chris Haughton (Walker, €14.30HB)
If this beautifully illustrated book doesn’t persuade reluctant toddlers to settle down for a night’s sleep then nothing will.
Little Bear refuses to give into tiredness and sets out to find playmates, all of whom are yawning and stretching before their night’s sleep.
However, meeting so many tired forest creatures soon gets to him and his sighs and yawns overcome his tiredness.
Each featured yawn and stretch, possibly imitated by the parent reader, and the snoring of the animals is complemented by the repetition of the many ‘goodnights’.
The colours used are at once bold but overall soothing, especially the magentas and purples. Worth a try for age two and upwards.
Halloween: Uncover the Truth behind this Spooky Celebration by Richard Platt and Richard Watson (Egmont, €10.80HB)
This sturdy boardbook is full of spooky, fun as a celebration of Halloween, where Mum and Dad get their children kitted out to enjoy their first Halloween outing.
With wonderful spooky clothes and brilliant pumpkins they go to meet up with their friends who are also imaginatively dressed with scary gear and carrying very colourful lanterns.
This will create many a laugh for age five plus with comic-style illustrations and over 50 flaps to lift. Each flap asks and answers typical questions about scary Halloween and horror topics.
Why don’t we all live together anymore? by Emma Waddington and Christopher McCurry (Frances Lincoln, €11.50HB)
The introduction analyses the reactions of different age-groups to a family break-up, warning that though the child may seem to be accepting the situation this is usually not the case.
Most of the children’s concerns centre around how the break-up will affect themselves. The text deals with typical questions and advises that honesty and reassurance are the best tactics.
The illustrations by Louis Thomas invite interest from young children and act as a spur to a vital question-and-answer session. Suitable for age four and upwards.
