Even the twists have twists in this edge-of-the-seat thriller, the first written in English by Transylvania-born former journalist EO Chirovici.
It centres on the unsolved murder of a well-known psychologist and Princeton college professor rumoured to be involved in an undercover government project.
Written from three viewpoints, the story kicks off 25 years later, after a manuscript written by a student who knew him lands on a literary agent’s desk. Is the book a veiled confession, or is it pure fiction?
The mystery is taken up by a journalist who re-investigates the case from the beginning and, finally, we hear from the retired detective who failed to solve it at the time, but comes back for a second crack.
Running through it all is the theme of false memories and how we all rewrite history to suit our own psychological needs.
It keeps you guessing right to the last page and, even afterwards, leaves you wondering how much of what we accept as reality exists only in our own minds.
