VIDEO: Fishermen rescued after abandoning trawler off Cork coast

Three Portuguese fishermen were plucked to safety from stormy seas in a dramatic rescue on the Cork coast last night.

The men were recovered from the water after abandoning their stricken vessel as it drifted close to rocks near Kinsale just before 6pm.

The men lost everything on board the vessel and Kinsale RNLI was last night coordinating efforts locally to source clothes for them.

The alarm was raised at around 6pm when Valentia Coast Guard tasked Kinsale RNLI to respond to a vessel in distress off Money Point.

Weather conditions at the time were atrocious, with gales and heavy seas.

There were unconfirmed reports that the 20ft beam trawler, which left Kinsale on Thursday night to go fishing, had suffered engine failure and was in danger of being driven onto rocks.

The crew of the Kinsale inshore lifeboat Miss Sally Ann (Baggy), under coxswain Nick Searls, was on the scene in less than 15 minutes. They found the three fishermen already in the water, all wearing buoyancy aids. The fishermen were recovered onto the lifeboat uninjured, but were taken to Kinsale suffering from shock and mild hypothermia.

The lifeboat crew established that the men had been in the water for about two minutes each. The lifeboat crew returned to Money Point in a bid to secure the stricken vessel.
