Two youths held in handgun case

TWO youths were still being held by Limerick gardaí last night after they were found carrying a powerful handgun.

They were arrested by armed detectives who had mounted an operation near Moyross involving the surveillance of certain individuals and locations.

Gardaí moved in on the two youths at around 7pm on Wednesday as they walked at Knockalisheed Road.

On searching the pair, detectives discovered one carrying a powerful handgun. It was not loaded and no ammunition was found.

The youths, both 17, were brought to Henry Street Garda Station where they are being held under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

Gangs in Limerick move guns around to different locations using teenagers and young children. In some instances they use drug debts to compel young drug abusers to transport guns.

There have been numerous cases where young people have been used to conceal guns in their homes.
