Senator’s head injuries result of fall, not assault

There has been support from across the political spectrum for popular Labour Senator Jimmy Harte, who is being treated for serious head injuries following what is believed to have been a freak accident.

The Donegal senator underwent surgery in Beaumont Hospital on Saturday after he was found unconscious at around 3am that morning at Newmarket Square in Dublin.

The father of four had earlier attended Ireland’s friendly match against Latvia at the Aviva Stadium.

Gardaí are satisfied the injuries are the result of an accidental fall, not an assault.

Garda sources said Mr Harte was on his way home to his apartment in Dublin 8 and was discovered shortly after the incident — his coat and keys unaccounted for.

His condition was described as critical but stable, and colleagues said last night there had been no change throughout yesterday.
