Order for polling cards fuels vote day rumours

The ordering of millions of polling information cards and leaflets for voters on the EU fiscal treaty referendum by the Government has further fuelled speculation the vote will be held at the end of May.

A tender for nearly 3.3m polling information cards and pamphlets by the national procurement service says they must be delivered to local authority offices between Apr 30 and May 8.

It says the provider of the polling information cards and statements of information for voters will be given with the wording by Apr 23, at the latest.

Senior local authority sources last night said the run-in for a vote after delivery of cards and pamphlets to offices was generally three weeks. Friday, May 25, is now looking like the likely ballot day, said one source.

The tender states: “3,282,000 cards are to be delivered to local returning officers/local authorities throughout the country — week commencing 30th April and must be completed by 8th May 2012.

“It is estimated that copy will be available to the successful contractor week commencing 23rd April.”
