Planning process for Cork-Limerick motorway should start immediately, says TD

The Government-shelved inter-city road project, the M20, should be put before An Bord Pleanála again.

Fine Gael’s Deputy Áine Collins believes Transport Initiative Ireland (TII) should be examining the planning process for the Cork-Limerick motorway.

The Cork North West TD said while the Government did not have the €800m available, at present, to construct the road, it would be prudent to move ahead with the planning application now.

She wants to ensure planning is approved before the finance becomes available.

Ms Collins said she has spoken to Minister for Transport Paschal Donohoe about such a proposal.

It followed his announcement last October that the M20 could not be considered in the current Capital Investment Plan.

She said the minister’s decision at the time was “understandable”.

“In 2012 we had to withdraw the plans for the M20 due to the dire economic situation we found our country in.

“But the real issue for me is it will take at least three years for this process to once again go through An Bord Pleanála.

“I have lobbied the minister to lift this sanction so TII can make a start on the process of planning with An Bord Pleanála which will have no significant cost, so that when we do the Capital Investment Plan Interim Review in 2017, we would expect with continued economic stability and growth to be in a position to fund this vital motorway.

“It’s crucial to the economic development along the Cork North West Corridor,’’ she said. “I do welcome Minister Donohoe’s hopes to bring a start to the M20 in the 2017 mid-term review of the capital plan.

“However I strongly urge we should get the planning process started immediately.’
