The style stakes were high at the weekend as fashionistas from across the country vied for pole position and the title of Best Dressed Lady at Killarney Races.
But it was a Kerrywoman who emerged as the frontrunner, taking home a spectacular diamond ring for her efforts. The prize, worth €3,000, was presented on behalf of Keanes jewellers, sponsors of the competition.
Sally Ann Leahy, from Causeway, said she was overjoyed with the unexpected win, also taking home a beautiful bouquet of flowers and a plaque.
“I was totally shocked. I didn’t expect it at all. I thought you might have had to apply to enter the competition but then a woman came up to me on behalf of the judge and said I’d been selected as one of the 10 finalists,” she said.
Rita Zachar and Mary Hodnett of Kenmare, Lisa Fitzpatrick of TV3 and Maria Duyn of Kenmare.
“Then it was narrowed down to three. I couldn’t believe it. The ring, oh my god, it’s stunning.”
Sally Ann, 23, who is a home economics teacher in Castlegregory, was wearing a baby pink and silver two-piece outfit by Marion Murphy Cooney of The Design Atelier in Co Tipperary.
Her headpiece was from Annburys ladies’ boutique in Tralee, Co Kerry while her bag and shoes were of the Faith label.
Sally Ann attended the races at the weekend with a group of friends and her father, Tim Leahy.
“I’m so proud of her, she’s a wonderful girl, a wonderful daughter and a wonderful teacher,” said Tim.
Clodagh Irwin Owens of Killorglin, Ciara Irwin Foley and Eimer O’Shea of Killarney.
“We had a great day at the races; it was just brilliant. I’d like to thank Keanes especially and for everyone that made the day so special.”
The Best Dressed Lady competition was judged by Lisa Fitzpatrick, fashion stylist, author, radio host, and TV presenter.
Two runners-up, Gretta Peters and Lisa Marie McGuire, received €500 Keanes vouchers.
Ladies’ Day on Saturday brought this year’s August Racing Festival in Killarney to a close. The meeting featured 29 races and a prize fund of more than €400,000.
The four-day event, of which the Irish Examiner is media partner, attracted hundreds of punters, including the new Rose of Tralee Elysha Brennan. The Meath woman, crowned at the Rose of Tralee International Festival last Tuesday, was accompanied by her 31 rose sisters and their various escorts.
