Michael Fassbender tops online ranking of Irish stars

Michael Fassbender is the most popular Irish actor, according to the ultimate fame barometer.

The Oscar-nominated star is the highest ranking celebrity on the Internet Movie Database (IMDB) STARmeter rankings, which provide a snapshot of celebrity popularity based on the searches of millions of users on the site.

Liam Neeson is the second most popular, while Jamie Dornan is ranked third thanks to soaring interest since he wrapped Fifty Shades of Grey.

The list, which gives a fascinating glimpse into pop culture, has three stars of Game of Thrones among the top 10 Irish celebrities on the worldwide poll.

Despite being killed off in Game of Thrones, Jack Gleeson is in fifth place while Michelle Fairley, who played the slain Catelyn Stark is in seventh place, and Aiden Gillen is ninth in popularity.

Saoirse Ronan — ranking fourth — is the only other female to make the top 10.

Meanwhile, Jack Reynor has rocketed up the list in the past week thanks to the blockbuster opening weekend of Transformer: The Age of Extinction, to make it into sixth place.

Managing editor with IMDB, Keith Simanton, said the rankings, which are updated on a weekly basis, reflect the behaviour of millions of users.

“The rankings are really dynamic. It’s based on the number of people who visit pages on the site.

“Liam Neeson is up there, Jamie Dornan and obviously Game of Thrones.”

The IMDB poll is one of the ultimate yardsticks of celebrity star power week by week as it changes with the popularity of the latest films and TV shows when fans go online to the database to search for the hottest new stars.

“It is an extraordinarily good indicator,” said Mr Simanton.

“We had some movies come out, but they weren’t out yet and it was Orlando Bloom. The same thing happened with Harry Potter: Goblet of Fire. There was this one secondary character bubbling up higher than Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, and it was Rob Pattinson.

“We see people’s interest pretty early.”

He said the site, which sees 190m visitors every month, reflects the current global popularity of Game of Thrones, with three of its Irish stars appearing in the top 10 celebrities on STARmeter.

He said: “People are very intrigued, hooked and obsessed with Game of Thrones. It is extremely popular on our site as are a lot of TV series.”

Colin Farrell just makes in into the top 10 of Irish actors, while the relatively unknown Louth actor, Colin O’Donoghue, is ranked 11th due to his starring role in one of America’s biggest shows – the ABC hit drama Once Upon A Time.

The fairytale drama — starring O’Donoghue as Hook — regularly pulls in more than 8m viewers Stateside.

Hollywood stars Brendan Gleeson and his son Domhnall, along with household names like Pierce Brosnan, Cillian Murphy, and Kenneth Branagh, expectedly make the list in the high teens.

Relative newcomer Chris O’Dowd is ranked at 20, while Harry Potter star Evanna Lynch is a fan favourite at number 17.
