Mayor: RTÉ’s weather forecast puts dark cloud over North-West

A politician has said RTÉ is costing his county thousands of visitors because of dodgy weather forecasts.

County councillor and Mayor of Letterkenny, Dessie Larkin, said there was a perception that all it did in Co Donegal was rain.

He said such negative forecasts could be turning people off from travelling to the North-West.

He said most local people had more faith in UTV and BBC for giving moreaccurate forecasts.

Mr Larkin said recent weeks had been a perfect example of how Donegal escaped most of the strong winds and heavy downpours suffered by the rest of the country.

“We have had a decent summer and it has allowed for some amazing local festivals. But if you were to believe RTÉ, Donegal is constantly awash with rain and dark clouds.

“There seems to be the perception that if it is raining in Dublin then it must be raining everywhere else and that’s just not the case.”

He said perhaps the time has come for a better use of technology to be deployed by Met Éireann to give more accurate forecasts.

If it could not do that, he suggested Donegal County Council should supply a local weather service or use mobile phone apps.
