Man held after assault on younger teenage brother

An 18-year-old man was in prison last night after he pleaded guilty to assaulting his younger teenage brother twice this week in the family home.

Oisin Malone, of 7, Hydeout, Tixassanmore, Kinsale, Co Cork, will face sentencing today in the case after being remanded in custody overnight following an appearance yesterday before Bandon District Court.

Judge James McNulty heard that Mr Malone, who has no previous convictions, had twice assaulted his 17-year-old brother this week — once on Monday evening and again on Wednesday.

The court heard that in the first incident he had accused his younger brother of hiding the key to his bedroom and that a verbal altercation turned physical, resulting in Mr Malone’s brother receiving blows to the face and head from an open fist.

The court heard that in the second incident, which took place on Wednesday at approximately 4.45pm, Mr Malone had spat at his younger brother who was then pinned to a sofa and dragged around the room by the hair. The judge heard that when the boys’ father intervened he was pushed and shoved.

The judge said the matter was “very serious”, as in carrying out the assaults Mr Malone had been in breach of a protection order which had been in place since July 4 following a separate incident, for which Mr Malone was also on bail.
