‘Love/Hate’ goes global with streaming and sales

RTÉ’s homemade crime drama Love/Hate will be available in 35 countries with international voice-over actors in the roles of Nidge, Fran, and others.

In a first for the series, it will be dubbed into French and German in a new deal with on-demand film and TV service Netflix.

The broadcaster said all five seasons of the hit series would be streamed on Netflix in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg.

ITV Studios Global Entertainment, on behalf of RTÉ, secured the multi-year subscription video-on-demand deal with Netflix.

It also emerged Love/Hate has already been sold to 30 countries, including the UK, Norway, Australia, the Middle East, Singapore, South Korea, Israel, Brazil. along with Hulu, Netflix and Amazon in the US.

Jane Gogan, RTÉ’s head of television drama, said: “This is fantastic news for RTÉ and Octagon Films. Our ambition has always been to make good drama for Irish audiences that can work internationally as well.

Tara O’Brien, the broadcaster’s communications manager, said: “It’s a huge project to dub the whole five series into two languages as obviously a lot of actors will have to be employed. It reflects the level of commitment on the part of Netflix that they are willing to take on the cost of this work.”

In Britain, the series was screened on Channel 5 but subtitles had previously been used in all of the non-English speaking countries.

Ms Grogan said average viewers for series five on RTÉ had topped 1m.
