Labour TD says mobile operators should answer for poor service

A Labour TD wants the country’s mobile operators hauled before an Oireachtas committee to answer questions about their coverage.

Clare Labour TD Michael McNamara says claims of “99% coverage” by Ireland’s three mobile phone licence holders “has more holes in it than their service”.

Providers have claimed that they have up to 99% coverage, which Mr McNamara believes is leading customers to understand that 99% of the country has mobile phone coverage.

“There are currently three licence carriers in Ireland — Vodafone Ireland Ltd, Three Ireland [Hutchison] Ltd, and Meteor Mobile Communications — claiming 99% of Ireland’s population has mobile phone coverage, however the quality of that coverage leaves a lot to be desired,” said Mr McNamara.

“Despite the claims of the mobile companies, it is clear to me that coverage has deteriorated in the past year.

“If the complaints regarding coverage that I have received are anything to go by, most of the 1% of the Irish population that the telephone companies admit do not have coverage, must live in Co Clare.”

There have been calls previously that any future auctions by communications regulator Comreg of the mobile phone radio spectrum, should include a condition forcing operators to cover as close to 100% of the population as possible.
