Socialist TD and Anti Austerity Alliance (AAA) member Paul Murphy has said a Limerick councillor who threatened an AAA activist should not continue as a public representative for the alliance.
“In terms of the councillor, John Loftus, who made really unacceptable threats to someone over social media, that’s completely unacceptable, completely wrong behaviour,” said Dublin-based Mr Murphy.
Mr Loftuswas expelled as a member of the alliance on Tuesday night. He did not attend the meeting.
He has refused an AAA request to resign the seat and intends continuing as a member of Limerick City and County Council.
Last weekend, Mr Loftus texted fellow anti-Irish Water activist Greg Doran with the message: “I tried to be nice. The next time I see you, I’ll cut your fucking throat.”
Mr Loftus apologised for the remark and said he never had been violent to anyone.
At an event to promote tomorrow’s Right2Water national protest, Mr Murphy said the “really unacceptable threats” mean Mr Loftus cannot continue and should be replaced by another candidate.
