TRANSATLANTIC co-operation between two police forces will culminate this coming Friday with a major concert designed to raise money for families of children battling cancer.
The charity – Cops For Kids With Cancer – is aiming to raise up to €10,000 from a gala concert in Cork City Hall and a golf tournament.
It will feature the Cork Garda Choir, the Army 4th Infantry Battalion Pipe Band and the Band of An Garda Siochána.
Special guest on the night will be soprano Fiona Murphy and tenor Anthony Kearns. The MC will be actor Paschal Scott, who plays Sergeant Dick in RTÉ’s Killinaskully TV series.
The charity was founded 11 years ago by Garda Pat Hanlon from Cork and Captain John Dow of the Boston Police Department and every year since 2000 law enforcement representatives from both countries have participated in a Ryder Cup-style golf tournament played alternatively in Ireland and the USA.
The Irish and Americans will take part in tournaments next Thursday and Friday at Fota Island and Lee Valley golf clubs.
“This will also form part of the overall fundraiser. I know it’s hard to ask people to part with money these days, but it is for a very worthy cause,” Garda O’Hanlon said.
Funds raised will go to Brú Columbanus. Concert tickets, at €25, are available from Pro Musica on Oliver Plunkett Street in Cork.
