GARDAÍ were questioning five people after guns and €1 million worth of drugs were found in Co Tipperary last night.
In a separate investigation, two men were also arrested in Co Offaly in connection with an audacious bank raid in Edenderry last September.
In Co Tipperary, five people were arrested over the weekend after a Garda swoop on a number of properties uncovered drugs and firearms.
Two women and a man were arrested at a flat on Mary St in Clonmel at 11am on Saturday as part of a planned Garda operation in which three guns and a large quantity of cocaine and cannabis were found. The women, aged 31 and 37 years, and the 41-year-old man were taken to Clonmel and Cahir Garda Stations and are being detained under the provisions of Section 30 Offences Against the State Act. They can be held for up to 72 hours.
Within hours of the Garda raid on Saturday a second man, aged 21, was arrested at a house on Oakland Drive in the town and brought to Cahir Garda Station, where he is being held under Section 30 Offences Against the State Act. A follow-up operation later on Saturday evening led to a quantity of cocaine being seized.
A third man, aged 38, was arrested at an apartment at Bridgewater House in Clonmel at 4am yesterday. He was taken to Clonmel Garda Station and is being questioned under Section 2 of the Drug Trafficking Act. He can be held for up to a week.
Meanwhile, gardaí yesterday confirmed they had arrested two men in the early hours of yesterday morning in connection with an armed robbery on the AIB in Edenderry, Co Offaly, last September where e300,000 taken.
However, the circumstances in which they were arrested remained unclear last night. Gardaí said the men were only being questioned about the AIB raid, which happened after the robbers broke through the wall of an adjacent building. However, media reports suggested the men detained last night were arrested in a building adjacent to the Bank of Ireland branch in the town and that they may have been planning to break into the bank in the same way.
The two men, aged in their 40s, were arrested shortly after 2am and taken to Tullamore Garda Station for questioning. They are being held under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
