MUSIC fans have snapped up over 3,000 free tickets for a concert by Bryan Ferry due to take place during the forthcoming Tall Ships festival in Waterford.
The amount of interest in the event led to website problems during peak demand periods yesterday morning but organisers say the issue should be rectified for today’s release of tickets for the Waterboys concert.
The tickets for Bryan Ferry’s Bolton Street concert on June 30 were distributed on-line yesterday and within a half-hour, more than 3,000 were gone.
Free tickets for the Waterboys, supported by O Emperor who hail from Waterford, are being made available from 9am today while tickets for the other free show — Sharon Shannon with special guests Damien Dempsey and Dessie O’Halloran — go online at the same time tomorrow at www.waterfordtallshipsrace.ie/tickets.
The free tickets, which cannot be sold on, are limited to two per applicant with measures being taken to ensure multiple pairs of tickets are not allocated to the same people. The tickets are going out across separate days to give the widest opportunity to apply for one of the shows.
In addition to the online ticket allocation, free tickets for all three concerts will be distributed at John Roberts Square in the city from 11am on Saturday, June 4, when there will be separate queuing for each of the three concerts. As with the online distribution, a first-come/ first-served system will apply.
Project manager for the Tall Ships Races 2011, Olivia O’Reilly, said there was huge traffic to the website yesterday morning, reflecting the interest in the event.
“We are aware that some people were disappointed to experience difficulties with the website in the peak period from 9am and we hope to have this issue rectified. Those who didn’t get to sign up for tickets to the Bryan Ferry concert online will have a further opportunity in Waterford on June 4. In addition to the main stage at Bolton Street, there will be a huge range of entertainment across the city centre while the fleet is here so there’ll be loads to do for people of all ages and interests.”
Waterford City Council and Port of Waterford are the lead delivery agencies for The Tall Ships Races 2011 in Waterford.
