A move by council contractors to almost cut a road in half — but leave the old road markings in place for now — has Ennis people locals up in arms after a few near misses on the route.
As part of Phase One works on the West Clare Railway Greenway, contractors acting on behalf of Clare County Council have reduced the road width on a two-way system in the Cloughleigh area of Ennis to accommodate new pedestrian and cycle paths.
However, the narrowing of the road has been done with the old road markings in place for now, giving motorists travelling north towards Lahinch the impression that they have only a couple of feet at one point to drive their cars through on the left hand side of the road.
The current road layout has come under fire from residents, with a number stating that it has caused near-accidents.
On the Ennis Forum page on Facebook, one contributor says: “Driving the other day and I almost knocked down a person — a joke Clare Co Council,” with another stating: “Almost been hit twice on this road as the oncoming vehicle was following the white line and obviously hadn’t travelled this road since it was cut in half.”
Another contributor, says: “I saw a poor fecker burst his tyre because he was just following the white line.”
Another remarked that “some barristers will make a nice living arguing the results of this out in the courts” with another stating: “OMG… this is absolutely ridiculous”, while another remarked that it was “an accident waiting to happen”.
However, one contributor wrote: “Those layouts are in a few spots in Dublin. You just give way to oncoming traffic — no biggie,” while another wrote: ‘When it is finished, it will actually be class — a safe running route — how bad?”
A spokesman for Clare County Council yesterday said: “The extension to the footpath in the photograph forms part of the Phase One Contract 1 works on the West Clare Railway Greenway. A priority system for traffic on the road in question is in operation. The lining scheme will shortly be completed by the contractor.
“The markings in place at present are the old ones — prior to reconfiguration of pedestrian/cycle paths which is incorporated in the ongoing Greenway contract. The lining to compliment the new layout will be provided very shortly and the old redundant lining will be removed.”
The West Clare Railway Greenway project is a 42km cycling and walking route linking Ennis and Lahinch via Corofin and Ennistymon along the route of the dismantled west Clare railway.
