Elderly woman in lucky escape

An elderly woman escaped serious injury after her car effectively collided with Fitzpatrick’s Shop in Glounthane, outside Cork City.

The accident occurred just after 7pm last night.

An eye witness said the woman was “shocked but otherwise ok”.

“She had a very lucky escape. It seems the car hit the shop and turned over on its side.”

A female shopper who had just exited Fitzpatrick’s shop narrowly escaped injury.

Fire crews, gardaí and ambulance attended the scene.

A second road traffic accident on the N22 Killarney to Tralee Road had a more serious outcome.

A woman in her 30s who was the driver and sole occupant of one of the vehicles was taken to Kerry General Hospital with injuries described as serious.

The driver of the second vehicle, an official Garda van, was taken to Kerry General Hospital with what are described as minor injuries.

As this collision involved a Garda vehicle, it has been referred to The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission which is standard procedure.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses to the crash which occurred approximately seven miles from Killarney at 7.45pm last night.
