Drunk man made ‘holy show’ of himself

An intoxicated man arrested at a place called Church Ground made “a holy show of himself” in a Kerry village in January, Kenmare District Court heard yesterday.

Padraig Casey, aged 37, of Frenanaugh, Clonkeen, Killarney, stopped traffic in Kilgarvan at 6.20pm on January 21. He was highly intoxicated, the court was told.

“This was in the middle of Kilgarvan. He was trying to thumb a lift. He was holding up traffic,” Supt Flor Murphy informed Judge James O’Connor.

“Did he know the direction he was going in?” Judge O’Connor asked.

His solicitor, Padraig O’Connell, said of his client, who appeared in court with an injured hand: “The truth was he did not know where he was going on the night, even though it was early.”

Gardaí arrested him at Church Ground. “He made a holy show of himself!” Mr O’Connell said.

Judge O’Connor convicted Casey and fined him €100, five days in default.
