Double probe into father’s crush death

A father of one who was crushed by a tractor and trailer in a workplace accident will be laid to rest today.

Diarmuid Cronin, 21, was found dead at Gasworks Lane off Anglesea St in Cork shortly before lunchtime on Friday.

He had been tipping a load when the accident occurred.

A co-worker raised the alarm when he realised Mr Cronin had been involved in a serious accident. He was pronounced dead at the scene and an autopsy was carried out at Cork University Hospital.

The Health and Safety Authority and gardaí are conducting separate investigations. It is understood Mr Cronin was working for contractors at the time of the accident.

Mr Cronin’s removal took place at O’Keeffe’s funeral home in Mallow, Co Cork, on Saturday to the nearby Church of the Resurrection. He will be buried at St Gobnait’s cemetery following 12pm requiem Mass today.

Mr Cronin is survived by his daughter Kayleigh, partner Sandra, his parents Jerry and Carol, and brother Tommy.

This is the second workplace fatality in Cork in a week. On Nov 23, a Cork County Council employee died after he was hit in the head by a pole which fell when a ditch was being cleared.

Michael O’Donovan, 46, was working in a housing estate near Carr’s Hill in Carrigaline when the accident occurred.

He suffered head injuries and was taken to Cork University Hospital, where he died. Mr O’Donovan was from Aghabullogue, near Coachford, Co Cork.

Cork County Council, the gardaí, and the Health and Safety Authority have launched separate investigations into the incident.
