A Canadian recruitment company managed to fill almost 450 of its 700 construction vacancies through two jobs expos held here over the last week.
On its second annual visit here, the British Columbia Construction Association found that visitor numbers to its expos in Dublin and Belfast were lower than previously. It still made 173 definite job offers in Belfast and 275 in Dublin.
The recruiters were disappointed the take-up was not higher in some areas.
For example, the association had been looking for 103 steelfixers, but was only able to fill a handful of those roles. It is now anticipated it will have to fill the roles with US workers.
Another disappointment for the recruiters was that many people who had received straight invites to interviews having been identified by their skills on the European Employment Service (EURES) system, did not turn up for those meetings.
The EURES mobility portal compiles both the CVs of workers around Europe and jobs that are currently on offer. EURES had contacted those on its books who matched the skills required by the association and had offered to have their names put forward.
Canadian construction employers are increasingly looking to Ireland to fill vacancies because there are not enough skilled and experienced indigenous workers at a time when the country’s oil and gas industries are growing and infrastructural projects are increasing.
Since the association’s first expo here in March last year, 482 skilled workers have been nominated for permanent residency in British Columbia.
Meanwhile, more than 100 jobs in the Newfoundland and Labrador regions of Canada will be on offer at recruitment events in Dublin on Nov 9-10 and Waterford on Nov 12.
Jobs in the catering, health, engineering, and construction industries will be on offer.
