A Cork micro-brewery has scooped six coveted medals at the prestigious World Beer Awards.
The Franciscan Well Brewery, on the North Mall, won two golds, a silver and three bronze medals, adding to 23 previous major awards in the past two years.
The brewery won the double gold for its Franciscan Well Jameson Stout and its Summer Saison, while it won silver for Franciscan Well Jameson Pale Ale.
Bronze medals were awarded for Franciscan Well Rebel Red, Franciscan Well Chieftain, and the wheat beer, Franciscan Well Hopenweisse.
The World Beer awards, established in 2007, reward exceptional beers from across the globe, with leading beer experts from Asia, Europe and the Americas electing the finest selection of brews.
The Franciscan Well Jameson Stout had been borne out of a collaboration between Dave Quinn, master of whiskey science at Jameson, and Shane Long, founder of Franciscan Well Brewery, in Cork.
Together, they explored the effect a Jameson whiskey cask would have on a Franciscan Well stout. Shane adheres to a strict, 100-day brewing process, to deliver the perfect balance of taste and aroma and a rich, smooth stout, fit for all occasions and with an ABV (alcohol-by-volume content) of 7.8%.
The Summer Saison beer was created for warmer months. Capturing the essence of summer, the deep-orange, cloudy beer holds a fruity aroma and sweet, malt flavour, with a hint of spice, and has an ABV of 5%.
For the second consecutive year, Franciscan Well Jameson-aged Pale Ale claimed a silver in the flavoured beer section.
It is also a collaboration between the whiskey masters at Jameson and the brewing innovators of Franciscan Well, and was developed by Mr Long using Jameson Whiskey casks handpicked by Mr Quinn. This resulted in a smooth, rich and refreshing ale, with unique flavour properties.
In addition to winning six medals at the World Beer Awards, the Franciscan Well also achieved acclaim at the International Beer Challenge Awards. It was awarded gold in the packaging category, for the Jameson Stout, and bronze for Jameson Pale Ale.
Mr Long said he was thrilled by the success.
“To win six highly-respected awards, with two golds, acknowledges the hard work, and the process of trial and error, that goes into brewing great beers,” he said. “This gives us strong encouragement to continue innovating as brewers and work on further exciting brews, and collaborations, in the near future.”
