RTÉ has appointed Dee Forbes as successor to outgoing director-general Noel Curran.
Ms Forbes, currently president and managing director of Discovery Networks Northern Europe, will be the station’s first female director general and the first external candidate to be appointed to the role in almost 50 years.
The West Cork native joined the Discovery channel in 2010 as head of the UK/Ireland operation, and eventually became the company’s head in northern Europe.
RTÉ said Ms Forbes will assume her new role later this year after a transition period.
“Although it was a tough professional decision to leave Discovery, the personal decision to return to Ireland and lead its biggest broadcaster, RTÉ, is an opportunity of a lifetime,” she said yesterday.
Ms Forbes led Turner Broadcasting’s business in Britain and Ireland prior to her time at Discovery.
The broadcaster’s stable consisted of entertainment channels including Cartoon Network, Boomerang and TCM. Ms Forbes undertook a variety of commercial roles at Turner including general manager for the Nordic/ Central and eastern Europe regions and head of advertising sales for Europe.
Moya Doherty, chairwoman of the board, RTÉ, said the appointment marks “a significant moment in the development of RTÉ.”
A native of Drimoleague, Co Cork, Ms Forbes’s parents ran the East End bar in the town, and she attended Sacred Heart Secondary School in Clonakilty before studying at UCD.
