A middle-aged man who denied calling a member of An Garda Síochána a “fucking bollocks” recalled the incident yesterday as the garda in the patrol car taunting him.
Judge Leo Malone convicted Denis Long, aged 54, of 261 Blarney St, Cork, of engaging in threatening words or behaviour on the occasion and he fined him €500.
Long said he made no such comments and that the guard had taunted him by looking at him and laughing at him over the steering wheel of the car.
Long said he had complained Garda Aidan O’Riordan to GSOC. Under cross-examination by Inspector Fergal Foley, Long said he had also made complaints to GSOC against three other gardaí.
Gda O’Riordan testified that he was in traffic at Western Rd, Cork, sitting in a marked garda car in full uniform at 10.45am on February 24, 2015.
He said he tried to avoid eye contact because of previous encounters with Long but saw him from the corner of his eye.
“I observed Mr Long crossing in front of me,” said Gda O’Riordan. “He crossed on to the passenger side of my vehicle. He stepped off the footpath. I felt intimidated. He leaned down level with the window and said, ‘you fucking bollocks’. He shouted this a number of times. When he was shouting these words he was gritting his teeth. I kept staring forward.”
