Community in shock as tyre explosion kills two

Two men have died in a farm accident after a tractor tyre exploded in Co Donegal last night.

The men, both believed to be in their 50s, were working to change a tyre on a tractor at a farm at Monellan, Crossroads, Killygordon, when it exploded.

They both died instantly.

The men have been named as Kevin Wood and Seamus Hegarty, who are both from the Raphoe area.

Mr Hegarty was married with four children aged 18, 12, 11, and 7. Mr Wood was not married.

Relatives and friends of the men rushed to the scene of the accident.

Emergencies services also attended the scene, with the area now cordoned off by gardaí. The Health and Safety Authority is expected to send officials to the scene this morning.

Local county councillor Frank McBrearty Jr knew both men. He said the area is still coming to terms with such a devastating double loss of life.

“Everyone is completely numb with shock with such a tragic double loss of life,” said Mr McBrearty. “I knew both men and they were hard-working and honest men.”
