Cash pile at presenter Joe Duffy’s media firm almost doubles to €419k

The cash pile at the media firm owned by one of RTÉ’s top earners, Joe Duffy, almost doubled to €419,000 last year.

New figures lodged by Claddaghgreen Ltd with the Companies Office show that the company increased its cash pile by €205,044 from €214,025 to €419,068.

In a bumper year for the Liveline presenter, profits at the firm rose by €154,293 going from €149,561 to €303,854 in the 12 months to the end of April last year.

The latest JNLR figures show that Duffy’s Liveline is the third most popular radio programme in the country behind Morning Ireland and Marian Finucane’s Saturday show, with listeners totalling 371,000 in the latest period — a marginal increase on the 369,000 listenership in the prior period.

Each year, the show generates substantial advertising revenues for the State broadcaster, but RTÉ does not provide a breakdown of advertising revenues generated by each show.

The popular RTÉ presenter is currently riding high in the book charts with his Children of the Rising topping the bestsellers list in Ireland in the ultra-competitive Christmas market.

In 2013, RTÉ confirmed that Duffy — who celebrated his 60th birthday on Wednesday — agreed to a further pay cut to bring his salary to €300,000 — down from €378,000 in 2011 when he was RTÉ’s fourth highest-paid presenter behind Ryan Tubridy, Marian Finucane, and Pat Kenny, who has since departed for Newstalk.

The abridged accounts do not provide the revenues recorded during the year.

The figures show that Duffy’s firm had creditors totalling €115,211 falling within one year with the firm’s net assets standing at €303,857.

The directors of the firm are Joe Duffy and his wife, June Meehan.
